Contributing to Hakusan biodiversity conservation

Spanning the four prefectures of Toyama, Ishikawa, Fukui, and Gifu, Hakusan National Park is known as a treasure trove of alpine plants and has developed a unique ecosystem.
However, in recent years, damage to this valuable ecosystem has become a problem. One example is the introduction of seeds for non-native plants like the plantains brought in on the shoe bottoms of hikers, resulting in the loss of habitat for the native alpine plants.
Therein, to prevent bringing in non-native plant seeds, Duskin mats have been installed for their superior sand and soil collection and durability. At the beginning of the mountain hiking season, we install mats in mountain trails and the like to collect seeds for non-native plants attached to mountain hiking shoe soles.

Comments from non-native plant response supervisor Hiroyuki Inaba

In order to prevent the invasion and spreading of non-native plant seeds at Hakusan National Park, we install mats at the mountain hiking entrance and along the mountain trails with cooperation from Duskin. It has already been a long period of over ten years since its commencement in 2007, and we are immensely appreciative of the continued and active support. As long as people are going to enjoy nature, this non-native plant problem is unavoidable. I believe this is an essential activity to conserve the rich biodiversity of Hakusan. Duskin mats hold on tightly to sand, soil, and seeds, and do not let go even in wind and rain. This is the level of high performance I feel they offer. Seed invasion is something you cannot actually see happening, but almost all of the hikers step on Duskin mats when hiking, and this prevents most seeds from penetrating. Seeing Duskin mats installed at the Hakusan National Park mountain hiking entrance has become a sight everyone is so used to now.

Coastal cleanup by employees

To collect scattered litter that causes marine plastic pollution, the Duskin Group periodically conducts cleanups.
